Ashley Freiberg

Ashley Freiberg is a BMW of North America Scholarship driver in the IHG Rewards Club #48 BMW M3 with Fall-Line Motorsports in the IMSA Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge.
Freiberg was first introduced to racing at age 11 when she worked as a timing and scoring official at the local go kart track. Just a short two years later in 2004, Freiberg decided to try racing and entered her first karting event that December with the World Karting Association (WKA) at Daytona International Speedway. At the end of her first season, Freiberg had placed fourth overall in the Championship Enduro Series as well as finishing seventh overall in the WKA points.
Having completed her first season, the passion for racing continued to grow for the young driver. By 2006, Freiberg had her first regional and national karting wins and had earned a WKA national title and a CES regional title. Freiberg, deciding to expand her horizons, began her path in formula cars.
Freiberg started competing in cars with the Skip Barber Racing Series while continuing to race karts and build experience. In 2009, she was well on her way to making history by becoming the first female in history to podium in the BFGoodrich Skip Barber National Series race at Road America. Also in 2009 Freiberg captured four race wins at Sebring, Road America, Road Atlanta, and Carolina Motorsports Park and was featured in the online web series, Rev, which accumulated over eight million viewers.
In 2010, Freiberg amassed 25 Skip Barber race wins and two Skip Barber Series Championships, becoming the first woman to win an overall Barber Series Championship, and the first woman to win a Skip Barber National Series Race. Freiberg deciding to expand her skills even more entered the Skip Barber MX-5 Cup Series where she became the first woman to win a MX-5 cup race and earned four wins in the six races she entered. During the same year she was awarded the prestigious Coach’s Choice Award as the best all-around driver in the Skip Barber National series. Freiberg also became only the second female other than Danica Patrick to be nominated as a candidate for the Team USA Scholarship.
In 2011, Freiberg won four Skip Barber races at the start of the year, and spent the rest of her year working hard to land a full-time ride for 2012. In 2012 TRUECar sponsored her to race with JDC Motorsports in INDYCAR’s Star Mazda Championship as part of the “Mazda Road to Indy.” She finished 11th overall in her rookie season in Star Mazda, capturing six top 10’s with a best finish of sixth place at the Baltimore Grand Prix.
For 2013, Freiberg switched gears to focus on a future career in Sportscars. She joined sponsor EFFORT Racing in the IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge by Yokohama, quickly grabbing two top-five finishes in her debut during the season-opening Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring. She earned the Series’ points lead after securing her first podium of the year with a second place finish in Race #1 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in May to tie her for the championship points lead. The next race weekend at Watkins Glen Freiberg made history again by becoming the first woman to claim an overall GT3 Cup Challenge victory in North America with her win in race #2. The win also broke the championship tie, giving her the lead in the series championship point’s battle by four points. The weekend would be her last races with the team as the two parted following a difficult weekend in Canada.
In 2014, Freiberg kicked off her race season with a win at the Daytona International Speedway in her first race in the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge with Fall-Line Motorsports. With this win, she became the first woman in history to win an overall race at Daytona, and the first woman to win an overall race in the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge. Freiberg only raced 4 more events due to a lack of sponsorship funds.
Sports Illustrated Magazine named Freiberg a “Face in the Crowd” in 2013 and to stay fit for her racing, Freiberg explores the outdoors through rock climbing as told to espnW in a special athlete on-the-track feature. Rock climbing allows Freiberg to push her mind past her fear of heights, which helps give her the confidence to push the limits in her car while she is racing.
The Illinois native appears to have a normal quiet life when she is at home. She can be found enjoying the outdoors by also cycling, hiking, snowshoeing, running and skate skiing. However, daily activities also include strength and balance training as well as studying driving with both data review and simulator driving in order to push herself to the limit in any way possible to be prepared for the track.
